About the Illustrations
The figures and illustrations were all produced by FEDERICO FONTANA. Where applicable, references to other sources are provided in the figure legends, and permission to reproduce has been obtained. Fede is the Chief Product Officer and Co-Founder of Enhance-d. Originally from Verona, Italy, Fede lives in Bolzano with his wife, dog and two sons. An avid ski mountaineer (basically climbing mountains with skis) and a proud rescue dog parent, Fede brings his unwavering attitude and determination to every project he undertakes. Fede holds a PhD in human physiology from the University of Verona, Italy, and the University of Calgary, Canada. Between 2012 and 2019, Fede was the Head of Performance for Team Novo Nordisk professional cycling team and was VP of Science for Supersapiens. His experience of working with professional athletes living with type 1 diabetes on a daily basis has given Fede a unique perspective on the challenges regarding glucose management and sports.
THOMAS ZÜGER leads the Department of Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolism at Kantonsspital Olten, Switzerland. He is affiliated with the University of Bern and its Department of Diabetes, Endocrinology, Clinical Nutrition, and Metabolism (UDEM) at the University Hospital in Bern, where he previously worked as a senior physician. With a strong foundation in clinical practice across multiple medical disciplines, he combines patient care with research, focusing on diabetes, obesity, and metabolism. His expertise in diabetes technology and innovative care strategies aims to enhance the management and treatment of people living with diabetes. Thomas is particularly dedicated to the interplay between diabetes and exercise. He has contributed to the medical and scientific support of an all-diabetes professional cycling team and continues to assist recreational and elite athletes with type 1 diabetes in optimising their diabetes management in the context of exercise. These interests are also reflected in his leisure activities as a passionate cyclist and backcountry skier living with type 1 diabetes since the age of three.
